Press Release – BLAST PROOF STRUCTURE TEST of MELCHIOR

November 2024

Campus La Marañosa of INTA, Spain

Melchior is a project that aims to substantially improve a novel technology for the rapid detection of drugs, explosives, weapons and illicit objects hidden on individuals and in critical cavities of the human body, based on infrasonic mechanical impedance search, optionally complemented with other innocuous and non-contact technologies.

On 14th November 2024, the BLAST PROOF STRUCTURE TEST was carried out at INTA’s ‘La Marañosa’ Campus (San Martín de la Vega, Madrid, Spain) within the MELCHIOR Project. The test consisted of two real blast tests to a cabin with no equipment installed to verify that the structure was able to withstand the defined explosions as well as to evaluate the effect of the explosions on the prototype and the surroundings.

Preceding the test, the assisting staff visited the test site, the Effects Ballistic Square of the Weapons Systems and Ballistics Department, to see in situ the conditions under which the detonations were to be executed.

In the first detonation, using PG-3 explosive, the equivalent of 200 grams of TNT explosive was placed inside the cabin. In the second detonation, the equivalent of 15 kg grams of TNT explosive placed outside and located 6 metres from one of the entrances to the cabin was detonated. This test is in accordance with the requirements of the UK’s Aviation Security in Airport Development (ASIAD).

Finally, the assistants returned to the test area to check the effects of the detonations. Different records were collected for the subsequent analysis of the results obtained.

The day ended successfully.
